Inspiring faculty to transform education through the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL)

SoTL research focuses on investigating and improving teaching practices, student learning outcomes, and the overall educational experience. By engaging in this research, you have the opportunity to enhance your effectiveness in the classroom and create a positive impact on students. Below, I tie engagement in SoTL research with the 3 guiding principles (aka pillars) of the Faculty of Liberal Studies

Exemplary Teaching

SoTL research enables faculty members to With SoTL, you reflect on your teaching practices and develop a deeper understanding of what works best for your students. You can examine the impact of various pedagogical strategies, assessment methods, and course designs on student learning outcomes by gathering evidence and analyzing data. Armed with that knowledge, you can make informed decisions about your instructional approaches, which can lead to improved teaching effectiveness and enhanced student engagement. In this way, SoTL fosters a culture of continuous improvement because you are incorporating evidence-based practices and staying up-to-date with the latest educational research.

Scholarship

Through rigorous inquiry and systematic investigation, you can generate new knowledge and insights about teaching and learning in your specific field or in the college post-secondary environment. You are able to bridge the gap between theory and practice, making meaningful connections between the published literature, effective teaching strategies, and your lived experience/practice. When you disseminate your findings, through publications or presentations, you enrich the academic community and contribute to the ongoing dialogue surrounding teaching and learning. This also a foundation for evidence-based decision making, both within Durham College as well as in the larger system.

Durable Skills

At its core, SoTL research aims to improve student learning outcomes and engagement, which will help to support student development of durable skills in your classroom. By conducting research on how students learn best, you are likely to improve your instructional practices, assessment methods, and/or curriculum design. Applying these evidence-based approaches in the classroom enhances student engagement, promotes deep learning, and increases the likelihood of achieving desired learning outcomes. In this way, SoTL research empowers you to create transformative learning experiences that positively impact students’ academic success and future careers.
