Applied research holds immense potential to create meaningful impacts beyond theory. While theoretical research is vital, applied research bridges the gap between knowledge and real-world application. Embracing applied research can open doors to transformative collaborations, practical solutions, and a profound sense of purpose. Today, I will highlight some of the benefits of engaging in applied research!
Applied research provides an opportunity faculty to tackle pressing challenges. By focusing on practical applications, we can leverage our expertise to develop innovative solutions that address students’ immediate learning needs and make a tangible impact on their lives. Engaging in applied research also means that you can bring your firsthand experiences into the classroom, enriching the learning environment. You can share your research findings, either my relating them to the course content or by applying them to your pedagogy. By sharing your research interests/questions with them, you may also inspire students to connect theory with practice, foster critical thinking, and prepare them for the challenges they will face in their careers.
Applied research provides a platform for you to forge strong partnerships with industries, businesses, nonprofits, and government entities. Collaborating with external stakeholders not only enriches the research process but also creates opportunities for knowledge exchange, access to external resources, and possibly even funding support. Such partnerships could also potentially lead to future professional collaborations (e.g., guest speaker in your classroom).
Engaging in applied research offers us significant opportunities for professional growth and career advancement (especially if you’re not currently in a permanent, full-time role). It allows us to stay current with the latest best practices in education as well as technology trends (I’m looking at you, Chat GPT!). The practical skills and expertise gained through applied research also enhance your professional profile and can give us a greater sense of purpose.
Applied research initiatives enhance institutional visibility and impact and can lead to external recognition (e.g., as one of Canada’s top Research Colleges). Some research projects can attract media attention, industry recognition, and/or community appreciation. This increased visibility can attract students, faculty, and research funding, further elevating the institution’s academic reputation.
As college faculty, we can feel empowered by engaging in applied research and bridge the gap between theoretical academic discourse and the real world (i.e., the classroom). We can make a tangible difference in our students’ lives and contribute meaningfully to pedagogy in higher education more broadly.
